Mrs. Phyllis B. (Jefferson) Price was motivated by her love for Christ and lived according to the wisdom, “Love is 

what it does.” Having lived through the Great Depression and Jim Crow era, she was a trailblazing 

woman in her family: before non-traditional students and adults returning to the classroom were common, 

she demonstrated determination and returned to education later in life. 

 

The real word effect of this was particularly felt during dinner, where she turned the dining table into a 

space for education and the exchange of ideas as she and her two youngest daughters did their homework 

together, encouraged each other, and tutored one another. In this way, Mrs. Price lit the torch of passion 

for lifelong learning and education and inspired her children, grandchildren, and neighbors alike, 

illustrating education is worth obtaining and using it. 

 

As a demonstration of her love and genuine care for others, she sacrificed and gave her time, talents, 

resources, and listening ear in the service of her family, fellow church members, and neighbors. Mrs. 

Price warmly spoke life to children, particularly about their future, in her distinctive manner, encouraging 

them to capitalize on opportunities, perform with excellence, and to “keep up the God work.” 

 

The Phyllis B. Price Memorial Scholarship aims to do just that: help and empower underrepresented 

minority students to “keep up the God work” through providing financial assistance in pursuit of their 

educational and career goals.
